Mads Lawson tosses gem in series opener
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Columbia softball team split Saturday's doubleheader against host Brown in the Ivy League Opener. The Lions took game one of the series 1-0 thanks to some brilliant pitching from starter Mads Lawson. In the nightcap, the Lions were unable to get the clutch hit they needed, falling 4-3.
Columbia (9-13, 1-1 Ivy) finished the day with four total runs on seven hits. It could not get the clutch hit it needed, as the Lions were 1-for-12 on the day with runners in scoring position. In game two, they were 0-for-4 with the bases loaded.
In the circle, the Lions dominated. Mads Lawson led the way with a stellar start in game one, tossing her first collegiate complete game shutout. She scattered three hits and walked two, all while striking out a career-high eight batters.
The Lions needed her to be sharp because Brown's (6-12, 1-1 Ivy) game one starter, Macy Borowski (4-5), was equally sharp, striking out nine and holding the Lions to four hits and a run in the losing effort.
Columbia broke through in the top of the third when Sarah Mikami sent a ball the other way for a leadoff triple. The triple was the sixth of Mikami's career, which is tied for the third most in program history.
Caylene Nguyen knocked her in with a sacrifice fly. The one run was all Lawson needed; from the third inning on, she retired 14 of the final 18 batters she faced.
In the nightcap, Brown used a three-run first inning and held off Columbia to even the series.
Columbia struck first in the top of the first, scoring on an RBI fielder's choice by Alicia Marzouca after loading the bases with no outs. The Lions loaded the bases twice in the first two innings but could not hang a crooked number.
Brown answered immediately in the bottom half. After an error extended the inning, Abby Bettencourt delivered a two-out, three-run home run to give the Bears a 3-1 lead.
The Lions cut into the deficit in the second. With the bases loaded, Juju O'Brien drew a walk to force in a run and make it 3-2.
Brown added what proved to be the decisive run in the second inning when Jasmine Hsiao led off with a solo home run, extending the lead to 4-2.
Columbia pulled within one in the fourth. Caylene Nguyen doubled and later scored on an RBI single from O'Brien to make it 4-3, but the Lions stranded multiple runners and could not push across the tying run.
Columbia left 11 runners on base and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Edie Cobb earned the win for Brown, allowing three runs over five innings. Macy Borowski recorded the save with two scoreless innings. Lily McCord took the loss for Columbia.
Nguyen led Columbia with two hits, while O'Brien drove in two runs, and Eleni Katsivalis drew three walks.
Sunday's rubber match has been moved up a half hour due to rain in the forecast and is scheduled for a noon first pitch.
