NEW YORK – For the second straight match, the Columbia women's soccer team returned to Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 13 to take down its opponent in shutout fashion. Behind a first half score from first-year Rachel Alexander, the Lions blanked Iona 1-0 for back-to-back home wins and to improve to 3-2-0 overall on the season.
After gaining control of a beautiful right cross into the box by Emma Anderson, Alexander kept her poise just long enough to knock in an early score within 2:21 minutes of play into the game. The Silver Springs, Maryland native scored her second straight goal of the season, after notching the decisive goal against Manhattan on Sept. 11, to put the Lions ahead 1-0.
With senior Gabby Dubick in goal for Columbia, the defense took on the challenge of holding the Gaels off the board for 90 minutes. The Lions defense responded spectacularly to the challenge limiting Iona to only six shots in the game and no corner kicks. The victory gives the Lions its third shutout win of the season and the first for Dubick.
The Lions will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 18 at 6pm as they continue their homestand against Fordham.
