Sophomore attacker Alexandria Absey and senior midfielder Lindsey Ewertsen each tallied five points in the contest
NEW YORK – Twice the Columbia women's lacrosse team came within one goal in the second half, but Hofstra ended the contest with four straight goals to win 13-8 on Saturday evening at Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium.
Sophomore attacker Alexandria Absey and senior midfielder Lindsey Ewertsen each tallied a team-high five points in the outing. Absey recorded her third hat trick of the season to go with two dimes, while Ewertsen posted two free-position goals and a trio of assists.
Hofstra (7-4) began the game on a 4-0 run before Ewertsen put Columbia on the board with 23:05 remaining in the first half. The Pride extended their lead to 6-1, but the Lions would claw back within three using back-to-back goals from senior Sarah Nick and Absey. The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the half, but Ewertsen sent in her second 8-meter goal of the evening with 2:14 left in the period to head to the locker room down three, 8-5.
Columbia (3-8) cut that deficit to one with a pair of goals out of the halftime break as first-year Rachel Graff and Absey found the back of the net. Hofstra would respond with one goal before sophomore Chelsea Witteck would make it a one-point game once more off an Ewertsen dime.
After Ewertsen was assessed her second yellow card of the game with just over 13 minutes to play, Hofstra scored a man-up goal with 12:21 to play and scored three more to close the game.
Columbia resumes its Ivy League schedule next Saturday, April 6, traveling to face Harvard at 3:30 p.m.
