The Lions will welcome their crosstown rivals at 3:00 P.M.
NEW YORK -- The Columbia lacrosse team (1-0) will continue its six-game homestand, this Wednesday, in a 3:00 P.M. matchup against LIU on Robert Kraft Field. Fans in attendance are expected to abide by Columbia's spectator and venue policies requiring masking and proof of vaccination for all fans. Additionally, the contest will be streamed live on ESPN+ while statistics will run through GoColumbiaLions.com.
MURRAY MAGIC
The Lions return to Wien Stadium following a successful home-opening 13-7 victory over Manhattan. The win marked a career first for head coach Anne Murray who embarks upon her first season at the helm. She was joined by first-year assistants Shannon Nee and Tierney Larson as Columbia collected its first win since 2019.
TRACKING FIRSTS
Saturday premiered two classes of Lions, formerly untested at the collegiate level. First-years Dani Falcone, Kate Cunning, Ellie Eisner, Julia Griswold, and Simone Koryszewski joined Columbia's starting lineup while fellow underclassmen Noelle DeMarinis, Sophie Zachara, Ellie Taylor, and Lauren Yun made their collegiate debuts later in the contest. Of this group, Falcone, Cunning, and DeMarinis recorded their first goals, Falcone doing so twice.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
The fledgling season has produced a handful of early statistical leaders including senior Rachel Graff, Falcone, and DeMarinis. Following a hat trick on Saturday, Graff leads the Lions in goals scored (3) while Falcone and seniors Katie Lutz and Sydney Paoletti sit in a tie for second (2). Falcone leads Murray's squad in both ground balls (3) and caused turnovers (3); DeMarinis paces Columbia in draw controls (3).
LEAGUE HONOREES
Rachel Graff and Simone Koryszewski were named to the Ivy League's weekly honor roll on Feb. 21. A 2021 US Lacrosse All-American, Koryszewski made 12 saves and secured a second-half shutout in her collegiate debut.
OPPONENT
The Long Island Sharks (0-3) opened their season on Feb. 12, dropping to Hofstra 8-5 at home. Following a 12-6 loss to Iona on Feb. 16, the Sharks nearly defeated Quinnipiac but instead suffered a tight 8-9 loss on the 19th. Following this trio of games, sophomore Jen Gaffney and graduate student Amanda Massulo lead the program in goals scored (4) and tie for second in draw controls (5).
Columbia and LIU have not met since Long Island's Post and Brooklyn campuses combined athletic programs in the fall of 2019.
