Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Harvard to Open Conference Play

Lions win game one on a Cooper walk-off; drop game two
NEW YORK — Columbia baseball split a doubleheader with Harvard at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium on Friday, winning game one on a Jack Cooper walk-off, 3-2, before falling in game two, 8-5.
Columbia moves to 5-12 (1-1) on the season while Harvard is 3-12 (1-1). The two teams conclude the three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Game 1 Recap:
Cooper laced a walk-off single off the center field fence in the bottom of the ninth to win Columbia's Ivy League opener, 3-2. After loading the bases on a single, intentional walk, and then a walk, the Lions converted to earn the victory.
In the top of the ninth, Will Parkinson struck out the first two Crimson. William Lybrook doubled, then Max Lane reached on a throwing error. Then Max Giberti ripped a single to tie the game on a 1-1 pitch.
To open the scoring, Cole Fellows looped a two-run single in the home fourth to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
Starter Derek Yoo went 5.1 innings and pounded the strike zone, tossing 93 pitches (56 for strikes). The senior recorded a career-high six strikeouts and allowed just one run on five hits and two walks.
Yoo was relieved by Parkinson, who shut down the inning with six-straight strikes to strikeout back-to-back hitters and leave a runner stranded. Parkinson would finish with a career-high eight strikeouts after facing 11 batters in the conference opener.
Harvard got on the board in the sixth inning on an RBI single off Yoo. Fellows and Owen Estabrook each recorded a multi-hit game.
Game 2 Recap:
Harvard took a 1-0 lead in the second but Columbia responded in the third when Hunter Snyder grounded out to bring in Sam Miller.
Lions starter Joe Sheets retired 13 Crimson batters in a row from the final hitter of the second all the way through the sixth inning. Sheets finished with seven strikeouts, which is one shy of his career-high.
In the sixth, Anton Lazits reached on a throwing error that plated Skye Selinsky to make it 2-1 Columbia. The Crimson answered with a four-run seventh inning that featured a solo blast and a bases-clearing triple to take a 5-3 lead. The Lions fought back to tie it in the bottom half of the frame with a Snyder RBI double and a Selinsky two-run single.
Harvard would tack on three runs in the eighth and close out the victory in game two.
