Lions clobber Quakers with 25 runs on the day

NEW YORK — Columbia baseball took care of reigning Ivy League Champion Penn on Saturday from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium, winning 14-6 in game one and 11-1 in game two.

The Lions are now 34-6 at home since the beginning of 2022 and are 9-1 in home contests this year. Columbia (9-12, 4-1) sits alone atop the Ivy League standings while Penn falls to 11-12 (3-2). Columbia and Penn close out the three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Game 1 Recap

In the third inning, Connor Chavez and Sam Miller exchanged solo home runs to make it a 1-1 ballgame. Penn starter Cole Zaffiro had struck out all six Lions he had faced prior to Miller's home run leading off the home third.

Columbia broke open a 6-1 lead in the fourth. Miller was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The next batter was Eric Jeon, who blasted a grand slam for his first career home run to give the Lions a five-run advantage.

Columbia starter Derek Yoo went five innings and allowed just one run for the second-straight outing. Yoo recorded three of Columbia's nine strikeouts in game one.

The Lions plated a run in each of the final six innings, including a four-spot in the eighth to take a 14-6 lead. Jack Cooper and Miller both tallied three hits in the game. Cooper is the third Lion to drill three doubles in a game this season. The mark also ties the program's single-game record.

Anton Lazits, Cole Fellows, and Owen Estabrook each had a pair of hits. Will Parkinson tossed two scoreless innings to close out the win. He allowed just one hit and struck out three.

Game 2 Recap

Columbia jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the first two innings thanks to a Skye Selinsky RBI double and Fellows' first home run of the season.

The Lions blew open a 7-0 lead the following inning after Fellows' second home run in as many innings. His grand slam came after a Cooper RBI single earlier in the inning.

Lions starter Joe Sheets was strong over five scoreless innings of work. The junior allowed three hits and had three strikeouts.

Columbia tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning when Selinsky belted the team's third long ball of the game.
