Lions win fifth straight; clobber 24 hits

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — Columbia baseball defeated Seton Hall, 31-0, in seven innings at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium on Wednesday.

Columbia (20-14, 12-3) is the sixth Division I team in the country this season to score 31 runs in a game. Lions pitchers Jagger Edwards, Griffin Palfrey, Martin Zhang, and Brandon Madrigal combined to allow just four hits. Columbia earned its first shutout victory since April 8 of last year.

Jack Cooper recorded seven RBIs in the game for the third time this year. It's also the sixth time he has had more than five RBIs in a game. Palfrey drove in a career-best seven runs as well.

For the second straight game, Cole Hage led off in the top of the first with a home run for his 11th of the season. Columbia then opened up a 7-0 lead in the second inning. Palfrey belted a three-run shot for his fourth home run of the year. Anton Lazits and Jack Kail added on with run-scoring hits.

The Lions' bats continued to dominate in the third inning by putting eight more runs on the board to lead 15-0. After a Skye Selinsky RBI single, Cooper blasted a grand slam to left-center field. The frame was capped by an Eric Jeon RBI double and an Owen Estabrook sacrifice fly.

Jeon added a two-run home run in the fifth. Columbia then tacked on seven more runs in the sixth inning. Cole Fellows and Dean Reynolds each drove in runs. The Lions crossed the plate seven more times the next inning.

Columbia wraps up an eight-game road trip this weekend with a three-game set at Cornell. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
