ITHACA, N.Y. — Columbia baseball powered past Cornell on Sunday at Booth Field, 13-0, for its eighth straight win and fourth Ivy League series sweep of the year.
The Ivy League Champion Lions (23-14, 15-3) have locked up the No. 1 seed and will host the Ivy League Tournament from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium, which is set for May 17-20. With three road conference sweeps over Dartmouth, Brown, and now Cornell, Columbia has won all of its road league games this season for the first time since Ivy League baseball's inception in 1993.
"I'm extremely proud of the guys and their consistent energy and drive to get better each week," said head coach
Brett Boretti. "The regular season Ivy League Championship is a great accomplishment and to do it with a weekend of league play left says a lot about this group. We are very excited to have the Ivy League Tournament at home at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium."
Lions starter Thomas Santana had a no-hitter through five innings and tossed seven strong frames. The sophomore allowed just two hits and struck out a career-high eight.
James Vaughn pitched an immaculate inning in the eighth, striking out the side on nine pitches.
Columbia took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Sam Miller infield single and then when Griffin Palfrey scored on a wild pitch. It's the seventh straight game the Lions have put up a run in the first inning.
The Lions added three more runs in the third inning led by run-scoring doubles from Anton Lazits and Jack Kail. Owen Estabrook also had a sacrifice fly.
Miller blew the game open an inning later with his 11th home run of the season. The three-run shot made it 8-0 in the fourth. Cole Hage, Eric Jeon, and Lazits all cracked home runs later on for the Lions. JD Ogden pitched a clean ninth inning with two strikeouts.
Columbia hosts FDU on Tuesday at 1 p.m. from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.
