NEW YORK — Cole Fellows and Hunter Snyder each went 4-for-4, and Thomas Santana tossed six strong innings to propel Columbia baseball past Yale, 6-4, on Friday afternoon to open a three-game series.
Columbia (11-21, 6-8) extended its winning streak to three. Yale is now 23-11 overall and 11-4 in the Ivy League.
Fellows and Jackson Brewer each homered, while Jack Kail went 1-for-3 with an RBI to extend his streak of reaching base to 18. Snyder is also riding a 10-game hitting streak.
Santana struck out seven and allowed just two runs on six hits to improve to 4-3 and pick up his 15th career win, moving him into a tie for seventh on the program's all-time list. Payton Soske struck out five to bring the staff's total to 12, which tied a season high.
Columbia struck first in the bottom of the second after singles by Jimmy Chadwell and Snyder with just one out. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position for Owen Estabrook, who drove in the game's first run with an RBI groundout.
In the third, Kail drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third, thanks to a hit from Fellows. The Lions executed a perfect double steal with Kail sprinting home after a throw to try and gun down Fellows at second to double the lead. Brewer then delivered a towering shot over the wall in right-center, his sixth of the season, to extend the advantage to 4-0.
Yale had created traffic all game, and finally broke through in the fourth with a two-run shot from Davis Hanson to trim the deficit in half. However, the Lions continued to add on to halt any of the Bulldogs' momentum.
In the sixth inning, Snyder started another rally with a single and came around to score on a knock from Kail to make it 5-2 in favor of the Lions.
Walks and missing the strike zone nearly cost the Lions in the seventh. A double and a pair of free passes loaded the bases, and the Bulldogs pulled within two on a wild pitch. Soske buckled down for his third strikeout of the inning to limit the damage, and Fellows jumped on a 1-2 pitch for his team-leading seventh dinger of the year to restore the three-run cushion at 6-3.
It was more of the same in the eighth, as a pair of walks set up the Bulldogs' final run of the day. On a fly ball to right, the Lions attempted to throw out the runner tagging from third, but Chace Chaplin slid in safely. Columbia then tried to catch the trailing runner advancing to second, but Soske's throw sailed into the outfield, allowing Chaplin to score. The runner who started on first moved up to second on the play. Soske recovered to strike out his fifth batter of the afternoon and escape the inning, keeping the Lions in front.
Yale put the tying runs aboard again in the ninth after a double and a hit batter. Columbia turned to Evan Kleinhans to get the final out, and the senior delivered, inducing a groundout on his first pitch to pick up his second save of the season.
The Bulldogs' Jack Ohman (3-2) was charged with five runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.
Fellows and Snyder are the first Columbia duo to each post four hits in a game since April 19, 2023, when Andy Blake and Mike Decker accomplished the feat in a win over Marist.
