Lions Fall to San Diego State in Tempe

Sophomore attacker Alexandria Absey led the Lions with a game-high three goals
TEMPE, Ariz. – Sophomore attacker Alexandria Absey recorded a game-high three goals, but the Columbia lacrosse team fell, 15-7, to San Diego State in a neutral-site game in Tempe, Arizona on Sunday afternoon.
Absey scored multiple goals in a game for the third time this season to lead Columbia's scoring efforts against the Aztecs.
Coming fresh off a 12-9 win over Arizona State on Friday evening, Columbia (2-2) got on the board early as sophomore attacker Chelsea Witteck gave the Lions an early 1-0 lead just 22 seconds into the contest. The two teams traded goals in the early goings, but the Aztecs went ahead 4-3 with 10:03 on the clock in the first half and Columbia would not recover as SDSU scored six of the last seven goals in the period.
San Diego State (3-1) extended its lead with the first two goals out of halftime, but Columbia responded with a pair of goals of their own as Emily Manville connected off an assist from Alison Schwasnick before Regan Steed net her second goal of the season. Absey posted Columbia's final goal of the contest with 3:34 to play, taking advantage of a man-up opportunity.
The Lions continued to use their two-goalie system, with first-year Ryan Schlageter and junior Abby Roberts combining for 16 saves. Roberts recorded a season-high 10 saves in a season-high 23 shots faced.
Columbia will return to action next Saturday, March 2, opening up Ivy League action at Princeton. The game is set for a 3 p.m. opening draw.
