Saturday's game will also serve as Alumnae Appreciation Day
NEW YORK – Fresh off a thrilling victory at Harvard last weekend, the Columbia women's lacrosse team returns home to take on Yale on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium.
The game will serve as Senior Day for Columbia's six seniors (Katharine Berdy, Lindsey Ewertsen, Emily Manville, Sarah Nick, Laine Parsons and Madeleine Stuzin), as well as Alumnae Appreciation Day.
"This group of seniors has been instrumental in laying a new foundation for the future of Columbia lacrosse," said fourth-year Columbia head coach Andrea Cofrin on the 2019 senior class. "I am proud of the growth and maturity they continue to gain and I am confident all six of our seniors will be successful in all aspects of their lives. They are role models for our younger players on and off the field, leading by example in a positive way and always playing with fire and fight."
The Senior Day ceremony will be held on the field directly following the conclusion of Saturday's game.
The Lions (4-8, 1-3 Ivy League) picked up their first Ivy League win of the season last Saturday, earning a 15-14 triumph over the Crimson at Harvard Stadium. Senior midfielder Lindsey Ewertsen had a team-leading seven points behind three goals and four assists, while sophomore attacker Chelsea Witteck had a career-high four goals in the win. Ewertsen sent in the game-winning free position goal with 1:13 to play to seal it for the Lions.
Sophomore attacker Alexandria Absey leads Columbia with 26 goals on the season, while Ewertsen has a team-best 46 points on 21 goals and 25 assists. Junior Abby Roberts continues to be Columbia's go-to in the cage, ranked fourth in the Ivy League with 90 total saves on the season.
SCOUTING YALE
The Bulldogs enter Saturday's game at 5-6 overall, with an 0-4 mark in league competitions. Yale has yet to win a road game this season, owning an 0-5 mark in away games. Yale is coming off a 17-11 win over UConn on Wednesday, following an 18-12 home loss to Cornell on Saturday.
Sophomore midfielder Olivia Markert leads the team in its scoring efforts with 37 points behind 25 goals and 12 assists. Sophomore midfielder Sam Higgins follows closely behind with 35 points on 15 goals and a team-best 20 assists.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Lions have won three of the last four meetings between the two programs, with Yale leading the all-time series 18-4. Last season, Columbia earned a 12-10 victory in New Haven. Eleven of 12 goals scored by Columbia last season were from players who remain on the roster this season.
ON DECK
Columbia will host its home finale next Saturday, April 20, against Penn at 7:30 p.m. The game will be dedicated to raising awareness for the One Love Foundation, which aims to end relationship abuse through education about the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships.
