Sophomore Alexandria Absey led the Lions with four goals
NEW YORK – Sophomore attacker Alexandria Absey had a season-high four goals, but the Columbia lacrosse team fell, 17-10, to the visiting Yale Bulldogs at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The game served as Senior Day for Columbia's six seniors: Katharine Berdy, Lindsey Ewertsen, Emily Manville, Laine Parsons, Sarah Nick and Madeleine Stuzin. The Lions also honored their alumnae at halftime.
Led by Absey's four goals, six different Lions found the back of the net in the outing. Sophomore attacker Chelsea Witteck scored a pair of first-half goals, while Fallon Quinn, Katie Lutz, Orna Madigan and Parsons each tacked on one goal apiece.
Yale (6-6, 1-4 Ivy League) put the first points on the board, but Witteck quickly evened the score off an Ewertsen dime to start the Lions' scoring for the day. From there, the Bulldogs used an 8-0 stretch to take control of the game, a deficit Columbia (4-9, 1-4 Ivy League) would not be able to overcome. Witteck ended Columbia's scoring drought with 12:27 remaining in the first half, using an assist from junior defender Alyssa Adamo. Absey put one more goal on the board for the Lions in the opening stanza, but Yale took a 10-3 lead into the locker room.
On her Senior Day, Parsons got the second-half scoring started less than a minute into the stanza, and Absey helped cut the deficit by one more, but Columbia would pull no closer than five as the teams traded scores for the remainder of the contest. Both teams scored seven points in the second half.
Junior goalkeeper Abby Roberts played majority of time in the cage for Columbia, registering seven saves in almost 51 minutes of action.
Both teams saw similar scoring opportunities, with Yale just outshooting the Lions, 33-31, with a 25-21 advantage in shots on goal.
Columbia hosts its home finale against Penn next Saturday, April 20. Opening draw is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET.
