The Lions bats get the job done in a pair of victories over the Red Foxes
It was another big day for Jack Cooper, who was a combined 5-for-8 and reached base seven times. He belted a pair of homers in game two alone and tallied seven RBI.
GAME ONE
The Lions built a 9-3 advantage after seven innings, but Marist put up a four-spot in the eight and brought the tying run to the plate before Columbia shut the door to clinch the series win. Eric Jeon went 4-for-5 with three doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in the win. As a team, the Lions racked up 13 hits.
On the hill, Andy Leon earned the win (1-1) after allowing just one earned run on six hits in five innings of work.
Columbia scored two runs in the second after loading the bases with one out. Hunter Snyder picked up an RBI with a ground out, and a wild pitch brought in the second run to give the Lions the early lead before the Red Foxes drew even in the top of the third.
With runners on second and third and two outs, Bayram Hot reached after an errant throw on a ground ball to make it 2-2. Marist took its first lead of the day in the fourth after a leadoff double and Justin Kapuscinski singled to center.
Columbia regained the lead for good in the fourth, thanks to a leadoff homer from Anton Lazits, who pulled a 2-2 pitch well over the wall in left to knot things up. A walk and Jeon double continued the rally with one out. The following Lion hitter struck out, but a wild pitch allowed Kreutzmann to score, and Jeon came around after the throw to the plate was off the mark to extend the margin to 5-3. Two batters later, Griffin Palfrey made it a three-run ballgame with a double to deep center.
Jeon continued his offensive breakout with a double down the line in left to bring in a pair in the fifth, and a Miles Blackwell sac fly completed Columbia's scoring in the opener.
A leadoff walk and double started the Red Foxes' rally in the eighth, and an error kept the door open as they trimmed the margin down to two. In the ninth, Payton Soske came to close things out, and after giving up a leadoff single, he struck out the next batter and induced a game-ending double-play ball to earn his first career save.
GAME TWO
Palfrey also had a big game two, going 2-for-4 with four RBI.
The teams traded runs in the bottom of the first and top of the second, and Columbia gained some separation with a five-run bottom of the second.
The Lions loaded the bases with no outs, and Hunter Snyder brought in a pair with a base hit to center to make it 3-1. Palfrey beat out a potential double play to extend the advantage to 4-1 and continue the inning for Cooper. After reaching base four times in game one, the senior first baseman drove in two more with a single to make it a five-run cushion.
However, Marist closed within two after a three-run third after three hits and a walk. Starting pitcher JD Ogden did come up with a critical strikeout with two on to keep the Lions in front to close out his day. Columbia punched back in the bottom of the inning when Cole Fellows singled, and Snyder drew a walk to set the table for Palfrey, who singled to restore an 8-4 lead.
The Red Foxes refused to go away, scoring a pair with two outs thanks to a Marco Ali single in the fifth to draw back within two runs.
Columbia opened things up again in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases and tacking on an insurance run when Palfrey launched a sac fly to center. Cooper was in the middle of things again, jacking a three-run shot to center to make it 12-7.
Marist chipped away with a run in the sixth, and the first three batters reached in the seventh to cut the deficit to four. The Red Foxes pulled within 12-9 after a runner on third tagged up after a sliding grab by Sam Miller in foul ground. Another sac fly brought Marist back within two, but Thomas Santana stranded a pair with a strikeout to limit the damage heading into the seventh-inning stretch.
In the top of the eighth, the Red Foxes threatened again and pulled within 12-11 after Kyle Pollack dropped a single just in front of Lazits in right.
Columbia put the game away during its last at-bats after Cooper blasted his second longball, a two-run shot to give the Lions more breathing room. Miller added another insurance run with a sac fly, and Palfrey worked a 1-2-3 ninth to seal the win.
Brandon Madrigal was credited with the win after tossing three innings of relief.
The Lions will open up a five-game stretch on the West Coast against UC Irvine on Friday, March 8. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. ET.
