ALS Awareness Day
ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. ALS became more widely known internationally in 1939 when it ended the career of one of baseball's most beloved players and Columbia Alum, Lou Gehrig. For many years, ALS was commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Columbia baseball is proud to help spread the nationwide awareness of ALS and engage more people in the fight against this insidious disease. Baseball Homecoming
Columbia will recognize the 2014 Ivy League Championship team between games of Saturday's doubleheader. The 2014 Columbia Lions signified themselves as the ivy league champions with an at the time program-best 29 wins. The Lions recorded a 15-5 conference record en route to a two-game sweep over Dartmouth in the Ivy league Championship Series at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium. Columbia earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals in Coral Gables, Florida. It was Columbia's fourth appearance ever in the NCAA tournament and third under head coach Brett Boretti.
Last Time Out
Columbia won its ninth straight game (currently the second-longest streak in the country) on Wednesday afternoon with a convincing 14-2 victory over Fordham from Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.
Reigning Ivy League Player of the Week Jack Cooper recorded his fifth five-RBI game of the season. Jagger Edwards, Brandon Madrigal, Martin Zhang, JD Ogden, and Griffin Palfrey all tossed scoreless outings on the mound. The Columbia pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts.
Home Cooking
Columbia is now 36-6 at home since the beginning of 2022 and 11-1 this season. The Lions are averaging 10.3 runs per game in home contests this year.
All-Time Wins Leader
Columbia head coach Brett Boretti became the program's all-time wins leader with last Saturday's 19-6 victory over Dartmouth from Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park.
It was the 360th win of Boretti's 19-year Columbia career, surpassing Hall of Famer Paul Fernandes for the all-time rank in program history. Boretti is now sixth all-time in wins amongst Ivy League coaches since the conference was formed in 1956.
Statistical Leaders
The Lions lead the Ivy League in doubles, RBIs, home runs, runs scored, and slugging percentage. Columbia has also grounded into the fewest double plays (nine). Individually, Jack Cooper leads the conference with 39 RBIs and ranks in the top 30 in the country in home runs per game (0.42).
Series History - Yale
The Lions are 81-103 all-time against Yale and have won 11 straight games in the series. Columbia took each of last year's three games in New Haven by one run.
On Deck
Columbia hits the road on Tuesday for a midweek matchup at St. John's. First pitch from Keiser Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
