CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Columbia baseball successfully defended its Ivy League crown in commanding fashion on Sunday, routing Harvard 19-1 to complete a series sweep and close out the regular season. With the win, the Lions improved to 24-17 overall and 16-5 in conference play.
Columbia has already earned a spot in the 2025 Ivy League Baseball Tournament scheduled for May 16-19. The Lions now await the outcome of next weekend's Yale-Dartmouth series to determine the tournament's host site and top seed.
"It means a lot to have our seniors win their third Ivy League title in their four years," said head coach Brett Boretti. "This senior class is one of the best all-time at Columbia and they learned as first-years from a really special senior class in 2022. I'm proud of the way we finished the regular season strong and we are getting contributions from the whole lineup. We are looking forward to playing well in the Ivy League Tournament. Our No. 1 goal is the same - get to the NCAA Regionals."
This marks the Lions' 17th Ivy League title and is the eighth under head coach Brett Boretti, who also picked up his 400th career victory with Columbia.
Columbia tied a season high with 19 runs and tallied 19 hits, and racked up a total of 43 runs in the three-game set.
Jack Kail led the way, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Griffin Palfrey also drove in three runs on three hits, while Tate Vogler contributed three RBI of his own.
On the mound, Jagger Edwards turned in a strong performance, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just four hits and striking out five. He improved his record to 3-3 on the season.
The Lions broke the game open early, sending 11 batters to the plate in a six-run second inning. After four walks helped plate the first two runs, Sam Miller delivered a two-run single, followed by RBI from Palfrey and Cole Fellows to cap the frame.
In the fourth, Kail blew the game open with a two-out, two-run triple. Palfrey added a two-run double in the fifth to push the lead to 10-0. Columbia continued to pile on in the sixth with RBI singles from Skye Selinsky and Anthony Temesvary, followed by a sacrifice fly from Hunter Snyder to make it 13-0 before a brief rain delay.
After a scoreless seventh by Will Harrigan, play resumed with Columbia adding four more runs in the top of the eighth. Harvard broke up the shutout in the bottom half of the frame, but Pat Wade answered with a three-run home run in the ninth. Justin Bowman closed out the game with a scoreless final inning to seal the victory.
